Powerful Winds Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to stay indoors as strong winds strike the country.

Powerful gales reaching velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 properties without power and forced agencies to halt more than 100 air travel services, based on regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the entire southern region and southern sections of the northern region, according to the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in central regions including Wellington and Canterbury.

People have been advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting households mostly in the southern region, although authorities report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have reported that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, and trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a person was killed after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel in and out of the urban area have been suspended as a result of the weather, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have issued a state of emergency, to support emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Alongside Severe Conditions

The powerful gales on this day occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been described as a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the extreme weather has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests relocated inside or called off.

Comparable winds are impacting the nearby nation, bringing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Agencies have announced flame prohibitions for concern about wildfires.
