In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without immediately offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key developments leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
