The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
