RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
